Heathcote Reserve is Applecross - high on a hill with spectacular 180 degree views of the Swan River. Definitely the playground with the best view anywhere in Perth. Our kids call it the 'pirate playground' because the main feature of the play equipment is a giant wooden replica boat that kids can run all over, climb up and down and pretend to be Captain Feathersword. There are swings and some low to the ground play equipment for the younger kids.
And the coffee? There is a kiosk attached to the Blue Water Grill which is the restaurant and function centre on site. The kiosk sells takeaway coffees to sip while watching the kids play pirates. The kiosk also does cakes icecreams etc if you are hungry. There are tables to sit down and enjoy the view.
Two points to note - the first is that younger kids, 3 and under perhaps, need a lot of supervision on the pirate ship in the playground. There are a lot of high balconies, steep steps and other places to fall down so it is common to see mums and dads clambering all over the ship shadowing toddlers.
The second point is that parking is very limited at Heathcote, on busy days many people park down the hill and walk up to the park.
The site is also home to the Heathcote Cultural Centre, and Heathcote Museum and Gallery, located in the refurbished hospital buildings on site.
