Hyde Park

Hyde Park is in the North Perth / Highgate area, although technically it is part of the suburb of Perth. Apparently it was originally known as 'Third Swamp Reserve' and at one point had a stone wall all the way around the outside. If you walk around the lake and read the Hyde Park history plaques, you can learn these and other interesting facts! The playground at the western end of the park is the one closest to the coffee - and this playground is very recently been upgraded. There is mostly sand on the ground, and a variety of play equipment. The main play area is a  big wheelchair/pram accessible climbing structure with towers and ladders and rock walls and climbing nets. There is a small space net to climb up, swings with softfall under them and an old-fashioned spinning around thing that makes kids dizzy. There is also a liberty swing in the park for disabled children.

There are softfall paths around the play equipment, and picnic tables and chairs and bbqs.  Lots of low limestone walls are also great for sitting on while the kids play. The playground is not fenced from the road or from the lake (not that there is much water in it!) so you will need to watch littlies carefully.  There is also no direct shade, the big old trees surrounding the playground provide some shade but not enough. There are toilets very close on the edge of the playground area.

The coffee comes from a patisserie on the corner of Palmerston and Bulwer Streets - it is a very short walk from the play area.  It is called Le Papillon and they do fantastic takeaway coffee.  There is also a dine in area where you can have coffee and pastries or cakes.
